BUENAVISTA, MARINDUQUE— Tucked inside the forests of Barangay Bagtingon is the majestic Bulusukan Falls and its small pool that makes for a tempting dip on a hot summer day.

Barangay councilor Reynaldo Siena said the Bulusukan falls has been a picnic and swimming area for locals since he was 20 years old (he’s now 78). But this natural wonder has not been getting its fair share of tourists due to the lack of organized groups that can guide visitors during an hour-long trek.

Nonetheless, the adventure of going to the falls is a unique selling point, said barangay captain Mario Francisco II.

Normally, locals would reach the falls for 30 minutes from the main road but first-timers may take a while to traverse the slippery rocks and the spring pools. The trail does have its challenging parts – a portion would require you to scale a rock wall while grabbing a bamboo pole for balance.

During our visit, our group also encountered strong river currents that could be a little dangerous for younger kids but offer enough adventure for the more adventurous, outdoor types – a scene reminiscent of Survivor.

The cool pools of cascading waters on the rocks also offered relief to out tired leg muscles as a short dip is all it takes to feel renewed vigor to continue with the trek.

After 50 minutes of walking, we heard the soft drop of the waterfalls.

The falls, which is actually the second tier, was simply majestic from afar. Go near its pool to feel the soft, cool mist on your face and hear the hollow sound created by the cascading waterfalls. Standing in tranquility before the falls, one could feel more closer to nature  – exactly what the barangay captain hopes tourists would feel.

There are plans to initiate rock climbing on one side of the falls and climbing to the top of another side to see the first-tier of the falls above.

With a little improvement on the trail and installing new small huts to serve as cottage and dressing rooms, both barangay officials are hoping more people would visit Bulusukan Falls.
