MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – This month, airports will again be buzzing with vacationers and those going home to the provinces for the holiday break.

Notwithstanding the elbow-rubbing with other vacationers in airports this season, another common problem among flying travelers is cramming to prepare things to bring. Many people fail to prepare properly before flying off and often forget necessities that would have made their vacation better.

Here are some simple tips that vacationers should put in mind before flying for a vacation this Yuletide season:

Prepare your itinerary – Vacationers need to maximize the time while they are out-of-town. Knowing first how long and where you’ll be staying will give you a bigger picture of how to better prepare your items for travel.

Check the weather – One of the things that many people forget to do is checking the weather. Often, people think it will just be cold but this year, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned that the country’s December season will mostly be rainy. Knowing the weather means being better prepared. In addition, it also helps to do a little more research on the destination, especially if it’s their first time.

Prepare a budget – Vacation also means spending and while having your pockets filled with wads of cash from your 13th month pay or Christmas bonus, it’s still more prudent to set budgets for specific activities or purchases. Even with a relatively small amount, people can always enjoy their vacation if they know how to spend it.

List down items to bring – For every place to visit, one must know what to bring. Consider the necessities one might need for the specific location that will be visited. Will it be a cold or hot place? What will be the clothes and accessories to wear? What items will make things be more comfortable in such a place? Narrow down all these items and bring what is necessary.

Separate luggage – Clothes, personal care products, and other necessities can go with large luggage to be checked in the plane. For more valuable items, such as money, ATMs or credit cards, electronic devices such as laptops or mobile phones can go with hand carried bags. Also, always check the airline’s requirements regarding weight of luggage as well as prohibited items (liquids above 100 milliliters, pressurized containers, etc). Also, use bags that have security locks to prevent unwanted opening of bags.

Arrive early at the airport – You’re not the only one traveling this Christmas. There will be tens of thousands of departing and arriving airline passengers and odds are there will bound to be some issues ahead. Consider also the vehicular traffic due to late shoppers and those attending parties. Coming in early at the airport at least two hours in advance will save you from most of the hassles that travelers experience during this season.
