CORREGIDOR ISLAND – The government is allocating P25 million for the restoration of the Cine Corregidor Complex, a stone-and-cement structure that was used by American servicemen as a movie house prior to the advent of World War II.

The amount, allocated by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) under the directive of President Benigno Aquino III, will come from the present administration’s P72-billion disbursement acceleration that targets fast-moving projects.

In a statement, DBM Secretary Florencio Abad explained that the restoration of Cine Corregidor is part of the administration’s plans to preserve historically significant sites.

It also aims to boost tourism in Corregidor Island, which served as a coastal artillery base against sea-based attacks during the World War II.

“Aside from having a picturesque view, Corregidor stands for the courage, valor and heroism of Filipino soldiers who fought during World War II. That is certainly a cultural heritage that we would want to preserve and showcase to the world,” Abad said.

The Department of Tourism (DoT) Region IV will receive the P25-million budget for the retrofitting of the main Cine Corregidor and its adjacent structures. The DoT will also install solar lamp posts and reproofing of the solar panels of the nearby Pacific War Museum.

Several of Corregidor Island’s historic facilities have also fallen victim to typhoons, which erode structures.

The budget allocation was determined based on the increasing number of tourist arrivals to the island, from 70,891 in 2010 to 76,224 just in the first 10 months of 2011.

An upcoming event, the 2nd Corregidor International Half Marathon on December 19, is also expected to draw between 500 and 1,000 participants.

Corregidor played a significant historic role in World War II. In 1942, in what is known as the Battle for Corregidor, American Forces and a Filipino contingency held out against the invading Japanese Army until they ran out of food and ammunition, forcing them to surrender. The island was recaptured by the Americans in 1945.

the supposed restoration of corregidor is plain stupidity. Why kill the banyan trees creeping on buildings. Dont you know that this is what tourists are looking for.
