From restaurants to auto parts, Banawe is touted as the next Chinatown

QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— Banawe Street is is undoubtedly the first location that comes to mind for someone in need of automobile parts, an engine overhaul, or just about anything and everything related to cars.

The vicinity is also known as a favorite stop of Chinese food aficionados. Visitors of this area are most likely to leave with a full stomach because majority, if not all, of the restaurants serve their dishes buffet-style.

It is perhaps this distinct combination that draws both food lovers and motorists to this neighborhood. And with the local government currently beefing up its tourism campaign, the Banawe Street you see is now set to become the next Chinatown in the metropolis.

According to Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, the plan to redevelop this commerce hub is already underway as consultations with the entire community are currently ongoing.

“Together with the stakeholders, primarily the business community and its residents, we will come up with a master plan on how we can further emphasize and market the assets of the Banawe area and to both domestic and foreign tourists,” Belmonte said.

Auto enthusiasts need not worry as the city will in fact promote its “uniqueness” as the ultimate car parts destination in Quezon City.

Meanwhile, potential and established Chinese restaurateurs are encouraged to put up eateries that would offer foods and products representing the specialty of every province in China.

“The plan will be consistent with what we want – green city that is safe, aesthetically pleasing and accessible,” Belmonte added.

This city will first market its attraction spots to domestic tourists while the ground works to draw-in foreign investors are still being developed.

“Our interest is really to make Quezon City more attractive to its residents so they will spend here and not have to go to other cities. This is also while we are building the necessary infrastructures that would help attract foreign investors,” Belmonte noted.

Small and micro entrepreneurs (SMEs) will also be thought to become more tourism-oriented in terms of developing and marketing their locality along with their products.
