NAGA CITY, CAMARINES SUR— It has been over 87 years ago when devotees witnessed the canonical coronation of the Virgen de Peñafrancia, which is often referred to as Queen of Bicolandia and Inang Peñafrancia.
According to records of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia Shrine, the coronation took place on September 20, 1924 when Monsignor Guglielmo Piani – the Spanish delegate of Pope Pius XI to the Philippines – officiated the ceremony in Naga City.
Since then, the iconic Marian image has been attracting tourists to the city (and province) and its image everywhere made the image of the Virgin of Peñafrancia synonymous to the city itself.
It was also during that time when the Marian hymn composed by Father Maximo Heguera, titled Resuene Vibrante (or Himno a la Nuestra Senore de Peñafrancia) was first played in public, particularly in Plaza Quezon. It is now a popular song among Marian devotees and has a Bicolano version.
“We are blessed because Ina came to Bicol and we, her children, received Ina. The once private devotion of Fr. Miguel de Covarrubias, now became the devotion of the whole region. What was once a simple vow, now become the pledge of the Church in Bicol,” said His Excellence Leonardo Legazpi, Archishop of Caceres.
The canonical coronation of Inang Peñafrancia added more passion to her devotees, leading to the triumphant Tercentenary celebration last year. This year, the occasion is formally being closed with the theme Monstra te esse filium (Show yourself to be a child of Mary).
“Ultimately, becoming a true child of Mary means becoming a true child of God; this will only happen if we imitate Mary’s virtues and accept her too as our true mother, as Jesus did,” Fr. Legazpi told devotees.
