PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, METRO MANILA – La Charica Inn may be small compared to other hotels here but owner Charina Cabading takes pride in providing tourists with good service despite modest accommodations.

An avid traveler herself, Cabading said she looks for affordable but modern hotels during her travels. Recognizing that tourists in Palawan are likewise looking for exactly the same thing, she opened an inn which she herself considers like a second home.

“It is a small, four-storey hotel but we pride ourselves in giving guests good service and modern rooms,” said Cabading, who is also employed at the provincial tourism office.

Curiously, the name of the hotel means “beautiful queen”, actually derived from Cabading’s nickname and her parents’ initials.

To entice her clients to explore more of Palawan, she put souvenirs she collected from each town of the province. There are displays of wooden carvings as well as woven banigs or floormats adoring parts of the hotel.

“More than being a hotel, you should also promote local destinations so I let them see and touch my collections of Palawan handicrafts,” she said.

It was my first time to stay here I would describe it as classy for a provincial hotel. The staff is ready to help carry your bags as you climb the flights of stairs. The hotel was designed not to have an elevator as cost-cutting mechanism and to encourage guests to move around more, according to its owner.

In case you want a more spacious room, you can opt for the family room at P2,400 per night. If you are part of a group, there are double-deck beds in dorm-type rooms.

I occupied a deluxe twin room (P1,300 per night) which was both cozy and homey. The warm light in the room and the efficient use of space was also a welcome delight for me. The room comes with a television and is fully airconditioned but in case you wanted to sleep al fresco, then just open the windows to enjoy that natural Palawan breeze.

The room stay includes a free breakfast with coffee but you can order as well from the restaurant. Should you plan to have late night orders, the restaurant closes at 10pm so phone-in your orders an hour before that.

What I love about the place is that it is in the heart of the city and traveling to short-distance destinations such as Plaza Cuartel or the famous Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church is only five minutes away.

From the airport, it would be about 20 minutes away. The best part about that is that the one-way fare to any of these destinations (along Rizal Ave. or airport) would only cost you P7.
