MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA— The “Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal” is series of life size statues and other works of art depicting the heroism of the national hero.

The tableau also includes important events in Rizal’s life.

One sculpture shows the hero with his sisters and his beloved mother. Another depicts Rizal giving a speech during his early years and still another shows his imprisonment in Fort Bonifacio.

The center of the tableau and the biggest among the sculptures shows Rizal’s execution by firing squad at the bagumbayan.

Visitors can view the sculptures created by national artists Eduardo Castrillo and Ildefonso Paez Santos.

Aside from the sculptures, Rizal’s most famous literary works are also shown.

One of which is this verse from Rizal’s “Mi Ultimo Adios” (My Ultimate Goodbye) he wrote before his execution:

“Farewell, parents, brothers, beloved by me,
Friends of my childhood, in the home distressed;
Give thanks that now I rest from the wearisome day;
Farewell, sweet stranger, my friend, who brightened my way;
Farewell, to all I love. To die is to rest.”

I have always been a fan of Rizal and I don’t really get tired of discovering his life and works but I hope that the younger generation can also find time to rediscover their roots and visit this place with pride.

Aside from a park attraction, this place reminds us that we Filipinos are brave and intelligent defenders of freedom.
