TUMAUINI, ISABELA—The St. Mathias Church is known for its unique architecture that has withstood the test of time.
Also known as the Tumauini Church, the church captures the attention of visitors with walls made of bricks and a one-of-a-kind cylindrical bell tower.
The bricks are designed with molded details such as foliage, surfaces, cherubs, flowers, and even the images of saints. Most visitors refer to the cylindrical bell tower as “postcard” perfect.
The Spanish era church was eventually declared a National Historical Landmark on February 24, 1989.
The church was first built using only nipa. It was rebuilt in 1753 by the order of Father Domingo Forto and was completed in 1803. As part of the rebuilding efforts, artisans from Pampanga were commissioned to carve wood moldings for the clay insets, giving the brick walls an added Filipiniana touch.
Today, the church interior still has the unique bricks but the convent is now in ruins.
To get there, you can take a bus to Tuguegarao which will pass by the town of Tumauini. You can just have a short walk going to the church if you have reached the central part of Tumauini.
