LIPA CITY, BATANGAS – To many Catholics, the Mary Mediatrix of All Grace church is one of the most beautiful churches in the country. What makes the church even more special is the story behind its name.

During our short visit to this church, a parish worker shares that the name “Mediatrix of All Grace” was given by Mother Mary herself during an apparition a long time ago.

Before the church was constructed, there was a Carmel Monastery in the area. The apparition occurred in 1948 when Mother Mary appeared to a member of the Carmelite order named Teresita Castillo.

Mary appeared several times in front of Teresita and stressed the importance of praying of the rosary, humility, penance, and prayers for the clergy.

In one apparition, Mother Mary eventually said the church should be named “Mary, Mediatrix of All Grace.” A statue was soon created for Our Lady, Mediatrix of All Grace.

Some members of the church, however, declared the apparitions “fraudulent” in 1950. The public was even prohibited from taking a glimpse of the statue of Mary.

After 40 years, Archbishop Ramon Arguelles lifted the 1951 ban on the public veneration of the statue of Our Lady, Mediatrix of All Grace.

Since then, there have been many pilgrims visiting the church. The statue of Our Lady stands in the garden in the church.

To this day, many devotees continue to flock to the church particularly during Holy Week.
