GAPAN CITY, NUEVA ECIJA – Just about every Filipino, probably even those now living abroad, know the comfort of wearing a pair of tsinelas or slippers. In celebration of its ubiquity, this city holds an annual fiesta simply called the Tsinelas Festival.
It is an audacious event wherein the city’s sandal manufacturing businesses create gigantic sandals that line up along Maharlika Highway, in front of the city’s municipal hall.
While the sandal making industry has been around since the 1930s, it was only during the last decade that Gapan manufacturers, supported by the local government, officially started the Tsinelas Festival.
Most sandal manufacturers are home-based, though during the festival, they put up stalls along the highway to showcase their products. In most days, they sell their sandals for about P200 a pair, which is quite cheap compared to more expensive brands.
The festivities were previously held in the nearby town of Bucana but moved to the main city a few years ago in order to build Gapan’s reputation.
