TANAY, RIZAL— If you’re fond of the water but the beach or the swimming pool is already a familiar setting, trekking down Daranak Falls should provide a different kind of adventure.

Located far from the noise of the city, the 14-meter high waterfall hides in the middle of Sampaloc Road. To get there,  you have to you have to pass farmland and traverse a rocky road. A footbridge serves as entrance to the Daranak Falls Park.

For a measly entrance fee of 20 pesos, you can roam the park all you please and swim all day. Or, fork an extra for around 200 to 350 pesos for a cottage. Overnight stay, however, isn’t allowed due to safety risks such as rocky walkways .

Compared to more familiar tourist spots, it is not fully developed as much but there are enough shower stalls and good-sized tables for picnics. It is said that its name was derived from a local phrase “dadanak ng dugo”, which literally means to shed blood.

Also, if the Daranak Falls area looks too crowded, you can opt for nearby Batlag Falls although there is a  separate entrance fee. There are also many areas to trek and hidden caves, which you can check out with the help of a guide.

Daranak Falls, meanwhile, is also famous for having lent its picturesque natural beauty as setting for several few local films. That alone guarantees a worthy visit.

Directions to Daranak Falls (courtesy of waypoints.ph):

If you are going by public transportation, you can ride a jeep or FX to Tanay in Araneta center (Cubao) or in front of StarMall (Edsa cor Shaw blvd). Get off at Tanay market and take a tricycle (or jeep if you are a large group). You will normally get the tricycle for P150/trip (max 3 passengers). You can bargain for the return trip as there are no tricycle waiting near the falls. You will have to take a hike to the main road to get a ride back to the market.
