MANILA, METRO MANILA – Youngsters from the town of Santa Cruz in Davao del Sur will get first-hand training from renowned Spanish professional football team Real Madrid.
This through a “social and sports school” established by the Real Madrid Foundation and the MAPFRE Social Action Institute.
The project aims to encourage underprivileged children in hostile-ridden areas to commit to their education by allowing them to train and play football for free in exchange for keeping up with the school’s lessons.
“Football is a very important movement here besides linking Spain and the Philippines in an aspect as fundamental as sports. We now have to train the Azkals of the future,” said Spanish envoy to the Philippines Jorge Domecq.
The Real Madrid Foundation will bring in professional coaches from their team to train teachers, who will then be the student’s coaches through the ‘They Play, We Teach’ program.
This will cover physical training, skills and tactical training, education and psycho-social training and in didactic and pedagogic methodology.
The foundation’s local partner, the ANAKK-Santa Cruz Association, will help provide the formal education required for the students to participate in the program.
For its part, MAPFRE will cover the annual financial support (about 16,000 Euros) to sustain the maintenance and other needs such as training materials and school uniforms.
“It’s not about which student will play better or worst in this program. What matters is the lessons they will learn through football which will help them become better members of their family and valuable citizens of society,” said Javier Warleta of MAPFRE Insular.
The school is set to open by December this year.
