PASIG CITY, METRO MANILA— In an effort to further hone the potentials of students who excel in sports, the Department of Education (DepEd) has increased the budget for schools that offer a particular training for athletics.

Some 17 secondary schools implementing the Special Sports Program (SPS) will be recipients to a P500,000-worth of subsidy aside from  budget allocated for the regular maintenance and other operating expenses for this school year.

These schools will also be receiving P290, 000 and a variable allocation computed at P500 per student-beneficiary who is required to participate in national or international competitions.

Among the schools listed under DepEd Order No. 71 include the Ilocos Norte National High School (NHS) in Region 1; Cagayan NHS in Region 2; Palo NHS in Region 8; Zamboanga Sibugay NHS in Region 9; Bukidnon NHS in Region 10; Datu Paglas NHS in Autonomous Region Muslim Mindanao; Tabuk NHS in Cordillera Administrative Region; and the Muntinlupa Science HS alone in the National Capital Region.

Majority – or 40 percent – of the specified amount is intended for the procurement of sports supplies such as athletic uniforms while 20 percent will be allocated for sports-related training of teachers and administrators as well as student development activities and travel allowance for competitions approved by the bureau.

This includes subsidy for those seeking to pursue higher studies in sports and other DepEd-sponsored scholarships.

Schools are mandated to conduct a yearly mentoring program to other schools within the 40 priority division in the region that plans to implement the same sports program. These will also be given access to the sports equipment and facilities.
