QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – “Fighting Congressman” Manny Pacquiao (lone district of Sarangani) has been chosen as one of the awardees of sports channel ESPN’s Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award (ESPY).

Pacquiao receives the Best Fighter of the Year after getting at least 10 belts from four weight classes, which is the highest number by any boxer. This would be the second time Pacquiao has been given the same award as he had received it first in 2009.

Pacquiao was also named Fighter of the Year by Ring Magazine in January this year.

Pacquio, who beat Shane Mosley for the WBO Welterweight World title, will be facing again Juan Manuel Marquez in November this year. He had previously beaten Marquez in 2008.

Not surprisingly, American boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr., who is considered the closest contender for the position of best pound-for-pound fighter, had also received the same award three times, first in 2007, 2008, then again in 2010.

The annual ESPY is bestowed to a number of athletes who have shown great skills and achievements in their respective sports. The Best Fighter Award is given to professional and amateur fighters in boxing or mixed martial arts.

There are 37 categories in the ESPY, plus at least two sponsored awards. Among the winners this year are the Dallas Mavericks won the Best Team Award while its power forward Dirk Nowitzki received the Best Male Athlete and Best NBA Player.

Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams won the Best Male and Best Female Tennis Players. Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay won Best MLB Player and also Best Moment. US Open champion Rory McIlroy won Best Male Golfer and Best Record-Breaking rmance Award.

The awarding was held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California last July 13 (July 14 in the Philippines).
