QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA -  5150 (pronounced “fifty-one-fifty”) is the name of the 1986 released studio album of Van Halen, the rock band formed by brothers Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen, together with their original lead singer David Lee Roth and Michael Anthony.

This was the first album recorded with their new lead singer Sammy Hagar, who had by then replaced Roth. 5150 is a California police term for a mentally disturbed person (a reference to Section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code).

It was also my entry number, as indicated in my racing bib, during a fun run which I recently participated in. Held last May 22 at the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) campus grounds in Quezon City, the 1st QCTAA fun run was also the first running event I joined after a year and a half.

The last one I participated in was the “Run Against Climate Change” organized by the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Batch 88 Alumni Association, which was held on November 15, 2009 at the UP Diliman campus grounds.

QCTAA’s fun run (3K/5K/10K) aimed to promote physical wellness, help cancer patients at the National Children’s Hospital, and provide assistance to a scholar at the Ateneo. It was held in patnership with the University Athletics of ADMU, and in coordination with the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya.

And promote wellness it did indeed! The road race was preceded by a warm up routine led by two Fitness First trainers, together with TV host and dance diva Regine Tolentino. Of course, Fitness First had a booth to promote their physical fitness training programs, while the Bioessence booth promoted their skin care products, slimming treatments, and wellness services.

The run itself was very enjoyable as the route included an early downhill run followed immediately by an uphill climb. It also provided an opportunity to run on the grade school track oval, wherein the soil surface gave the knees a welcome break from the usual shock of running on asphalt or cement.

The view from the east side of the oval was simply fantastic – the Marikina valley enveloped in the early morning fog! What a trip to augment your runner’s high!

The road race was also different because there were no motorized vehicles around, except for the motorcycle which was used by the race marshall. In a sense it was a “clean air” run, with hydration taken cared of by three Maynilad water stations in well thought of locations.

The event was climaxed by the awarding ceremonies and even had prizes, which included hotel overnight accomodations, raffled off. I remember seeing the travel related information booths of Fernandina 88 Suites Hotel, Gulf United Corporation (local service provider for Etihad Airways), and SarapMagTravel.Com. Hungry participants grabbed a bite at the Chowking booth while enjoying the program. All the fun run finishers were also given loot bags by the QCTAA and Bioessence,

Oh by the way, QCTAA stands for the Quezon City Travel Agencies Association, a non-stock, non-profit organization incorporated in 1999, and composed of travel agencies based in Quezon City. It is strongly supported by allied members in the travel industry and is led by business and professional leaders committed to improve tourism in the Philippines.

Its current President is Ms. Maria Michelle Reyes-Victoria, who is the President and General Manager of Golden Eagle Travel & Tours, Inc.

Before heading home, I happened to pass by the Philippine National Red Cross booth and saw the run’s oldest finisher (74 yrs. old/10k) having his blood pressure checked. Overheard the following from somewhere behind me: “Pare, may laban pa mamaya yan si tatang.”

And Van Halen’s “Love Comes Walking In” starts playing in my head as I walk towards my vehicle.
