BALER, AURORA – A group of Filipino enthusiasts is seeking to promote surfing in the small, quiet town of Baler.

Surfari Philippines was founded by surfing enthusiasts Jasper Enriquez, Benjamin Uy, and Ron Manghinang.

“We were just hobbyist back then but we saw the great potential of Baler. It wasn’t only for the consistent waves of the beach but also because of the talented locals who are very much willing to teach,” Enriquez says.

The group eventually established Surfari Philippines to promote Baler as another surfing hotspot in the Philippines.

The company has also enlisted the help of locals to teach surfing to Baler visitors.

Currently, Surfari Philippines offers packages inclusive of accommodations and surfing lessons. The package the group offers ranges from P3,000 to P4,000, which is good for a 3-day stay in Baler.

Okoy Rojo and Wilson “Saddam” Faraon, two of the notable surfers in the country based in Baler, are also helping Surfari Philippines in its efforts to promote surfing.

“Aside from Baler, we also set surf tour in other surf spots in the country such as Siargao and other places so that these gifted surfers might also have the chance to be recognized and find a sponsor who can send them to compete outside the country,” Uy adds.

The group is also currently putting up an online magazine where they can feature local surfers in the country. The group also conducts annual surfing competitions in Baler for beginners to promote surfing and also to discover new talents.

“Right now, we are just happy with the positive response we are getting from our satisfied market and we hope to prove someday that if we can excel in football like the Philippine Azkals,” Enriquez says.

Filipinos also excel in surfing because we are blessed with great waves and talented riders waiting to be discovered, he adds.
