QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA– Editha Botecario is getting closer to her dream of becoming an international basketball referee someday.

Editha recently finished her internship at the AirAsia Asean Basketball League (ABL). She was the first in the Southeast Asia region to complete the newly introduced internship program.

She says the internship program gave her the much-needed experience to closely see how to referee professional games.

This experience, she says, will surely help her get closer to her goal of becoming a referee accredited by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

Editha says she wants to follow the lead of Filipina international referee Cristina Columna.

“Basketball is not just about playing and coaching, there’s so much to learn but I want to pursue my dream of becoming a referee in the FIBA,” she says.

The 24-year-old Botecario never imagined that she would find interest in basketball.

Her enthusiasm in the sport started during her early college years.  “I suddenly got bored with my course (engineering) and I tried getting into sports and it really caught my interest,” she says.

Interestingly, Botecario never played basketball but she officiated a game back when she was still a student at the Camarines Norte State University.

“I was so nervous because I do not know the technicalities in basketball and that sparked by curiosity even more,” says Editha, who is now a third year physical wellness student at the University of Makati.

Prior to her internship, she had also officiated as referee for the Women’s Basketball League and Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA). She is also a coach for an under-10 basketball team.

Currently, she is also the current liaison officer for the ABL in the Philippines.
