PILI, CAMARINES SUR-A female wakeboarder from Quezon City has won the 2011 Ultimate Wake Championship (UWC) held at the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC) on Sunday.

Samantha Bermudez bested local and international wakeboarders to clinch the Pro Women Wakeboarding category of the UWC.

Bermudez said she “just tried her best” in winning the championship against Germany’s Elisabeth Fuchs in the finals.

The 24-year-old Bermudez is considered a “veteran” in the sport. She started wakeboarding when she was just 19 years old, initially trying out the wakeboarding facilities of Lago de Oro in Batangas with friends.

Eventually, she competed and tried other wakeboarding hotspots throughout the Philippines including Taal Lake, Batangas, and CamSur.

Bermudez also teaches the sport to budding Filipino wakeboarders.

After her UWC victory, Bermudez is setting her sights on international competitions, particularly the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Wakeboarding will make its debut at the SEA Games in Indonesia this November. “I hope to practice more starting this month for the SEA Games,” Bermudez said.

American wakeboarder Tom Fooshee, meanwhile, won the UWC overall championship after beating a field of some 80 local and international professionals.
