BACOLOD CITY, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL- The strength of a good basketball player can only be maximized if the coach know how to make use of this potential.
This, in essence, is the message American Frank Lopez imparted to hundreds of Filipino coaches who attended the Junior NBA Coaches Clinic in the country.
More than 200 coaches from Visayas and Mindanao attended the Junior NBA Coaches Clinic held at the St. John’s Institute in Bacolod.
Prior to this, some 200 coaches from Metro Manila and nearby provinces attended a similar clinic by Lopez held at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.
In both clinics, Lopez was assisted by Alaska Team coaching staff led by former PBA superstar Jojo Lastimosa, who helped run scrimmages and drills. Also in attendance was NBA Director of Basketball Operations Jama Mahlalela.
Lopez is no stranger to Philippine basketball. He has worked with coaches from Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines (BCAP) and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
The Junior NBA Program has visited the country for four consecutive years now. This year, Lopez sees the need to address coaches who play a crucial role in developing future basketball stars.
The American coach was a lead clinician at the NBA China Skills Challenge Basketball Camp in Guangzhou, China and led basketball youth camps for NBA teams Dallas Mavericks and Orlando Magic.
“Coaching is not just about skills and science. It’s a philosophy. It’s a way of reaching young people and making them learn all-important values about basketball and life,” said Lopez.
The Junior NBA program promotes the S.T.A.R. values in its clinics, which stands for Sportsmanship, Teamwork, a positive Attitude and Respect.
The Junior NBA Philippines Program 2011 is presented by Alaska with the support of official partners Asia Miles, Gatorade and Hi-Smart Multivitamins.
