MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA— The Discovery Perlas Pilipinas national women’s basketball team proved that height doesn’t matter after winning the 7th Southeast Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) Women’s Championship at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium recently.
Perlas Pilipinas team head coach Haydee Ong admitted that the team was at a disadvantage when it comes to height.
But in the end, the game plan of maximizing the RP cagebelles’ speed and shooting skills prevailed, allowing Perlas Pilipinas to win a lopsided 76-54 over defending champion Thailand in the finals.
On the first half, the national team depended on three-point shooter Joan Grajales who poured 14 points backed by Diana Jose who contributed 12 points. Team Thailand however was able to answer back, to close the half behind only by one point, 37-36.
Energetic team Philippines member Ewon Arayi fired 11 points while Melissa Jacob contributed with seven points to close the show.
“The players worked hard from start to finish,” said Ong in an interview, noting that the team had to depend on defense.
After winning the SEABA, Ong said that the team is now gearing up for the FIBA-Asia Women’s Championship and the Asian Games to be held in China.
