BAGUIO CITY, BENGUET — Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao and his entourage arrived in Baguio City early Monday to continue the Filipino ring icon’s training for an upcoming fight in November.
With Pacquiao is celebrated boxing trainer Freddie Roach and Alex Ariza, Pacquiao’s conditioning coach. Several foreign boxers who were tapped to be Pacquiao’s sparring mates were also part of the group which left Manila on Sunday.
Roach, quoted in a gmanews.tv report said he expects the training to “shift into high gear.”
“It’s time to get a little more serious now,” said Roach.
Pacquiao and his entourage left Manila less than 24 hours after breaking camp.
Interestingly, Team Pacquiao could have been stuck another day in Manila if not for the insistence of Roach to take the six-hour trip a day earlier.
Roach said he was avoiding “traffic” in the metro.
The celebrated trainer and Ariza got caught in a monstrous traffic jam along Edsa while they were on their way to Makati from the Elorde Gym in Quezon City.
Pacquiao’s closed-door training will be conducted at the Cooyesan Hotel. Training camp will be similar with the one Roach conducted last year, when Pacquiao was preparing for his bout with Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.
Pacquiao and his entourage will stay in Baguio for three weeks, before proceeding to Los Angeles for the last leg of the training.
The Filipino fighter is set to face Mexican challenger Antonio Margarito on November 14 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Pacquiao will be gunning for yet another world championship title in a record-setting eight weight division.
