SAN JUAN, METRO MANILA— Nowadays, most people know Ronnie Magsanoc as an active advocate of youth basketball camps.

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) legend says this is his way of giving back to the community, particularly the younger generation of Filipino basketball players.

Magsanoc, known for his court leadership and deadly three-point shooting during his heyday at the PBA, may be retired from professional basketball, but is still quiet active in the promotion of his beloved sport.

He is currently the assistant coach of the Meralco Bolts, a new team entering the PBA. Aside from this stint, Magsanoc keeps himself busy in continuing to conduct basketball camps.

“Basketball has been so good to us. The pioneers back then have set the road for us (second batch) and they became our inspirations,” Magsanoc says.

He says that basketball may have “changed,” compared to his “generation,” adding that fans “were solid to their teams regardless if their team wins or not” during his time.

Magsanoc further says he is hoping that today’s PBA stars can also give back something to the community and to their fans, just like what he and fellow legends have been doing.

He adds that he is happy that basketball continues to grow in the country and that he is optimistic that the country can soon participate in more competitions worldwide such as the FIBA.

“Hopefully, we can make a breakthrough in FIBA Asia with taller players and more homegrown talents waiting to be discovered in the provinces.”

He says one of the best qualities a good player must possess is the willingness to sacrifice. “It is never easy but as long as you’re willing to sacrifice and do your best inside the court, it will all pay off.”
