NBA, PBA hoop legends to thrill fans in Asia Challenge

MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA–Imagine Benjie Paras guarding the shaded lane with Chris Webber, or Gary Payton setting up Allan Caidic for a three-point shot.

Former National Basketball Association (NBA) players will team up with Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) legends in an interesting match-up highlighting this year’s NBA Asia Challenge.

Unlike the event last year, hoop legends and active players from both the NBA and PBA will be mixed up into two teams (Team White and Team Red) and will play against each other at the Araneta Coliseum on August 27 under FIBA rules.

The match-up is expected to thrill the crowd with NBA hall of famer Gary Payton, who played for the Lakers and Miami Heat, Glen Rice who played for the Lakers, Mitch Richmond and Chris Webber who played for the Sacramento Kings, playing alongside PBA legends “The Triggerman” Allan Caidic,”Point Laureate” Ronnie Magsanoc, “Aerial Voyager” Vergel Meneses, “The Fortune Cookie” Atoy Co, “Captain” Alvin Patrimonio and “Tower of Power” Benjie Paras.

Some of the top players of the PBA including LA Tenorio, Arwind Santos, Rico Maierhofer, Asi Taulava and Ronald Tubid will also join the roster.

To further reinforce the two teams, player from the NBA Development League will also including Mark Tyndale of Iowa Energy, former PBA import Richie Frahm of Reno Bighorns, Darnell Lazare of Maine Red Claws, and Chris McCray of Dakota Wizards.

“We are here to have fun and blend with the different culture and playing style of the Filipinos,” says Payton, who was also known as “The Glove” during his NBA stint.

On behalf of PBA legends, Magsanoc says he is thankful for the opportunity to be playing once again, this time alongside NBA legends and players.

The popular point-guard also said despite some of the PBA legends being retired for some years, basketball fans will be treated to a “great game.”

Acting PBA commissioner Chito Salud meanwhile says he looks forward for more partnerships with the NBA.

“May you always include us in your upcoming projects because before you is a crowd of a basketball loving nation and we’d love to develop and learn more with your help.”

Tim Cone  will coach Team Red and while Siot Tanquincen will coach Team White.

To add spice to the event, Miami Heat Dancers including the Miami Heat mascot Burnie will be featured in the halftime show.
