SINGAPORE – The Philippines leaned on its quick hands as it overpowered a hapless Iran, 28-19, Sunday to assure at least a 10th place finish in three-on-three basketball competition of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games at the *Scape Youth Space courts here.

Bobby Ray Parks, Jr., son of former many-time PBA Best Import Bobby, Sr., bullied his way to 10 points including a pair of booming triples as he helped power the Filipinos to the win over the Iranians, now the powers that be in Asian basketball.

Cris Michael Tolomia, whose brother Chester is a former pro, scattered nine points while Michael Pate and Jeron Teng, son of former PBA star Alvin, chipped in five and four points, respectively, to help in the cause.

It was the Nationals’ defense though that kept their offense humming as they picked the pockets of the Iranians nine times, five of which came from the six-foot-five Parks.

The win thus placed the Philippines in an interesting showdown Monday with Puerto Rico, another traditional powerhouse team, which edged Turkey, host of the FIBA World Championship late this month, for ninth place.

Puerto Rico, a country that produced the Miami Heat’s reserve guard Carlos Arroyo, is composed of Montaivo Torres, Kristian Medina, Onix Collazo Romero and Abdiel Badillo Martinez.

“Hats off the team and coach Mon Jose,” said a proud RP chief de mission Mark Joseph, who earlier commended the impressive facilities in this Youth Olympiad.

“With the win, we are now ranked 10th in the world. Tomorrow (Monday), we take Puerto Rico for ninth place, our best finish in an event of this magnitude. It’s already a proud accomplishment for us,” he added.

It was a sweet win for the Filipinos, who made it here after trouncing the taller Central African Federation, 22-13, on Saturday.

It also more than made up for RP’s heartbreaking performance in the group stages where they dropped three close games to US Virgin Islands, Spain and Croatia before salvaging some measure of pride with a lopsided win over South Africa to finish with a 1-3 (win-loss) card.
