MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – On court, he is often seen as serious and focused because he is the go-to guy and the team captain of the Arellano University Chiefs. But Andrian Celada says he is a comedian and quite the laidback guy off court.
According to the 6-foot-3 Celada, who is taking up hotel and restaurant management (HRM), he sheds the image of the serious and focused player when there’s no game, especially when he is with his best buddy and fellow basketball player, Neri Advincula, who plays center for the Chiefs.
“I always tend to crack jokes during our bonding moments. During free time, Neri and I would always go to a computer shop to play online games,” says Celada, adding that he gets tactics from playing online games and apply these tactics to the basketball court.
Celada, a native of Bulacan, also shares that he enjoys how the team lives in one dorm as it helps him manage his time wisely and save money.
“Para kaming magkakapatid (We are like brothers). We have to be home by 10 PM and we eat together and wake up together for our practice,” he says, adding that he has no regrets in choosing Arellano over other universities because the bonding with teammates “is incomparable.”
Although he is an HRM student, he admits that he can only cook sinigang and adobo but he hasn’t cooked for the team yet.
When its game time however, Celada says he is both leader and motivator, emulating his idol Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers.
The AU Chiefs have been improving compared to last season, and the team is in contention to become one of the contenders for the final four this NCAA season.
However, Celada says the team still needs to adjust a lot to improve its chances to bag the much-coveted NCAA crown.
“We have a few veterans left and our rookies are still adjusting to the crowd but I know in time, we’ll be the one to get the crown,” says Celada, who shoots 200 practice shots a day to improve his game.
“I believe it is important that we work on our personal growth especially with the NCAA’s television exposure because we always carry our family’s name in every game,” he says, hoping that the AU Chiefs will continue to have a favorable season next year.
“Our performance will always make our families proud.”
