JAKARTA, INDONESIA-An unheralded Filipino billiards player won the 2010 Guinness World Series of Pool 10-Ball championship held here.
Jundel Mazon, a player from Negros, outshone his more popular compatriots and crushed Indonesian player and crowd-favorite Irsal Nasution 10 to 5 in the finals.
The prestigious 10-ball tilt gathered 54 of the best players from across the globe including current World No. 1 and defending 10-ball champion Mika Immonen of Finland, World No. 2 Lee Van Corteza of the Philippines, and World No. 3 Ralf Souquet of Germany, among others.
Other Filipino bets included former world 9-ball champions Ronnie Alcano and Alex Pagulayan, as well as billiards stalwarts Dennis Orculio, Antonio Lining and Victor Arpilleda.
But Mazon proved to be the last Filipino standing, and after coming back to defeat former world champion Darren Appleton of Great Britain in the semifinals, met the Indonesian player for the championship.
Deadly “safety” shots and nerves of steel allowed Mazon to slowly crawl back from a four-game deficit against Nasution, according to Filipino blogger “anitokid” (http://anitokid.blogspot.com/)
“anitokid” in his latest blog entry said Mazon eventually outlasted the Indonesian player to cup the 10-ball championship and $40,000 in prize money.
The blogger further said Mazon, a professional pool player for the Negros Billiards Stable and JSY Sports, has become the latest Filipino world billiards champion.
