QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – Despite being a scoring wizard in high school, Joshua Saret says he is starting his college basketball career from scratch as part of the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons.
Saret was the designated go-to guy for the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Light Bombers during his NCAA days. He once scored 89 points during his senior year (along with 11 rebounds, 12 assists and 13 steals, for a rare quadruple-double) setting an NCAA juniors record.
The 19-year-old Saret decided to pursue his basketball career in UP, saying this allows him to fulfill his dream of playing before a big crowd like the UAAP while taking his studies seriously.
“I like UP because it has good system for the players and I am not having problems with my teammates,” says Saret, adding he has no regrets joining the Maroons despite the team’s poor showing last season.
Coming from a family of basketball players in NCAA (his father Eliseo Sr. and brother Eliseo III also played for JRU), the younger Saret says his family is supporting his shift to the UAAP. He says his high school coach Boy De Vera also supports his decision to play for UP.
But the 5-foot-8 point guard expects not to be in the spotlight like he used to when was still a star player for JRU.
“Ganoon talaga, minsan maiisip mo kung paano ‘yong dati pero kailangan mo isipin na iba na ngayon. (That’s how it is, things are different now). Total start from scratch and back to zero pero nag-eenjoy ako,” he says.
Playing for a college team, he says, requires him to be more aggressive while admitting he feels some pressure playing point guard for the Maroons.
“Hindi ko naman masyadong iniisip na sumikat, ang sakin lang―makalaro at syempre, work hard para sa mga gusto kong maachieve (I’m not thinking of becoming famous right away. I want to play as hard as I can),” he says.
