SAN JUAN, METRO MANILA – It was an already familiar ending for University of Santo Tomas (UST) but nonetheless a memorable victory for fans.
The Tigresses roared high in four sets of 25-20, 25-27, 25-12, 25-15 to beat rivals San Sebastian Lady Stags in the third and deciding game to win their third straight Shakey’s V-League title. It was also UST’s sixth title in seven years.
Team captain Aiza Maizo, earlier named tournament’s Best Attacker and the lone individual awardee from UST, turned in a stellar performance in Game 3 to bag the Finals Most Valuable Player award.
Minutes after Game 3, the UST Tigresses’ Facebook page was flooded with congratulatory messages from fans.
Ralph Orense compares the UST-San Sebastian rivalry to the Boston-Los Angeles in the NBA. Jose Blanco says the win vindicates the Tigresses’ worth as a team, since only Maizo won an individual award.
Fans, though, are lamenting the departure of Dindin Santiago, who is reportedly transferring to National University, resulting to the Dindin Santiago Stay With UST fan page on Facebook.
Along with Santiago, veteran Angeli Tabaquero, who missed the tournament due to a knee injury, will also no longer be playing for UST next conference.
Aside from three V-League titles, UST also bagged the UAAP title and the UniGames crown in Iloilo City in the past 12 months.
