BISLIG, SURIGAO DEL SUR – From a simple ‘promdi’ pool player, Dennis Orcollo has become one of the country’s finest cue artists and heir apparent to Filipino legends Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante.

Dubbed the “Money Game King”, Orcollo has listed his name as the latest Filipino pride in the world of pool after capturing the recent World Pool Masters crown in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Surigao Del Sur native, earlier regarded as the most promising Filipino player yet to win a world title, defeated Japan’s Toru Kuribayashi in the finals to take home the $20,000 top prize.

Orcollo himself said it was the biggest win in his career although it may be recalled that he also defeated the world renowned German player Ralf Souquet in the ninth annual Predator International 10-Ball Championship, the first Filipino to win the title.

His other major win was the first Qatar World 9-Ball Open in 2008, where he defeated Niels Feijen, after beating German snooker legend Ralf Souquet in the semifinals. He pocketed $40,000 in the money-rich tournament.

As a professional player, Orcollo began his US campaign in 2006 and won several tournaments while earning a reputation as a pool shark. Like Reyes and Bustamante, Orcollo struggled to create a name in pool, a sport where Filipinos excelled most next to boxing. He was first seen on television when he joined the Rising Stars Tournament back in 2000.

In this article by AZBilliards.com, Orcollo summed up difference between a money game and playing in an actual tournament. “In a money game, it might not matter if you play badly at the beginning you can still recover. But in a tournament, if you start badly you may lose.”

Orcollo used to be a fisherman back in his hometown of Bislig in Surigao before trying his luck in billiards, a game he grew fond of playing since he was eight years old. Today, he is savoring his recent victory while Filipinos all over celebrate the rise of another pool legend.
