SARANGANI PROVINCE, SOCCSKSARGEN – With his looming victory as congressman of this province, is Manny Pacquiao set to retire from boxing anytime soon?

According to reports, Pacquiao is leading by a comfortable margin against rival Roy Chiongbian in the race for the lone Congressional seat in Sarangani, home province of his wife Jinkee.

Pacquiao, already considered a national icon, ran for Congressman in 2007 in South Cotabato but lost to then incumbent Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio.

Pacquiao’s stature has grown since then and so the international media are now reporting on his latest political exploits.

USA Today reported that Pacquiao had taken majority of the 300,000 votes in Sarangani, even quoting a local election official. Sports websites such as Boxing Fanhouse also reported about Pacquiao’s landslide victory.

The Examiner.com’s Michael Marley, who is in General Santos City, is even writing a day-to-day account getting an inside track on Pacquiao’s political headquarters.

But amid talks of retiring from boxing, fans worldwide are still anticipating his bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr., to once and for all settle who the greatest pound-for-pound boxer is today.  Recent reports quote Roach saying the fight may push through this November even if Pacquiao becomes congressman.

Brad Cooney, sports columnist for the Mississippi Sports Examiner, believes that Pacquiao, who already has nothing to prove as a boxer, is still good for a few more fights. But if he officially becomes a politician, he believes Pacquiao will be retiring soon.

In 2007, when Pacquiao first ran for congressman, broadcast journalist Howie Severino wrote he is hoping for a Pacquiao defeat, citing the boxer’s inexperience in politics.

Pacquiao is a man of many interests, including dabbling in show business. This time around, with talks about him being ripe for retirement, Filipinos everywhere – not only his constituents in Sarangani – will be watching how he performs as a politician.
