QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— Now that he has settled his score with Shane Mosley, will Floyd Mayweather Jr. finally square off with Filipino pride Manny Pacquiao?
Mayweather scored a unanimous decision against the older Mosley in their Saturday (Sunday in Manila) welterweight showdown that many saw as a contest to see who earns the right to face Pacquiao.
According to news reports, Mayweather is still insisting Pacquiao undergo blood and urine tests, the very reason why their scheduled megafight last March was called off.
But Pacquiao remains firm in not letting Mayweather dictate the terms of the fight, even though Oscar dela Hoya, who fought (and lost to) both fighters, is saying the latter has earned the right to after his win against Mosley.
But there are still people taking Mayweather lightly, even scrutinizing his latest fight.
Charlie Knoxville of Nowboxing.com says Mayweather was not able to knock out a “tired, old” Mosley. He believes Pacquiao is a lot better than Mosley, not only in terms of speed and skill but more importantly, in terms of desire to destroy his opponents.
Inquirer sports columnist Sev Sarmenta says Pacquiao and Mayweather owe the world a fight and wishes for it to happen soon. Boxing News World gathers boxing analysts and their varying opinions.
Even before the Mayweather-Mosley bout, the entire world has been awaiting a Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown. Shortly after Mayweather’s win, the buzz has been at its fever pitch on a highly possible duel with the Filipino ring hero.
Michael Marley of Examiner.com believes there is a more powerful force that can dictate whether this would push through or not. Pacquiao is yet to issue a post Mayweather-Mosley comment since he is in the thick of his election campaign.
Right now, boxing takes a backseat to another traditional Filipino spectacle – elections.
