RODRIGUEZ, RIZAL— While the regular road run may already be a bit of a bore for seasoned runners, an adventure run serves as an off-road counterpart.

Last Saturday’s Merrell Adventure Run was meant for runners craving for a different twist. Instead of a paved road, the race was held on a rugged terrain. Not only was it a test of endurance,  it also required a ton of mental toughness.

This year, participants went through three-,  five- and 15- kilometer stretches while racing through the awe-inspiring scenery of Wawa Dam. Runners had to traverse a steep, uphill trail, pass through a cave and run through a river (albeit dry from drought)

Most of the participants were road runners, according to race director Thumbie Remigo. Thus, they were not used to such running conditions. Off-road running also requires careful attention to directions; unfortunately, most of the runners got lost.

Nonetheless, he describes the event as a success. For the runners, you can call it a learning experience.

“Road runners are not used with the trail run signs. So maybe next time, they just have to be open minded because adventure run is not like a regular running, it has surprises along the way without losing the basic principles of running,” Remigio says.

With an open mind, Remigio said runners can get to appreciate the trail run.

Crisenciano Sabal, who won in the 15-K division, says winning the race is always about balancing running skills while keeping himself mentally alert. “It was difficult especially with the steep trails but I just have to do my part and apply the training I had before joining,” he says.

He adds it is also important to wear proper shoes during a trail-run since it demands a different set equipment compared to a road run. A proper pair of sneakers, alright, and a lot of discipline and determination to reach the finish line.
