Biking to save the planet

QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA  -   One painted himself blue like a character in the movie “Avatar”, another proudly showed off his bamboo-made masterpiece. While thousands more wore no costumes, they all share the same mindset – that the most environmentally friendly form of transportation still runs on two wheels.

Now on its 12th year, the “Tour of the Fireflies” seeks to promote biking as a viable alternative mode of transport to help lessen pollution.  Like the disappearing fireflies, humans are also under threat from the dirty air, among other effects of pollution.

Some 8,000 bikers, young and old,  joined the tour last Sunday, which started in Tiendesitas in Pasig City, traveled through EDSA to Quezon City and then Makati City before going back to the starting point  -  or covering a total distance of 35 kilometers and, on the average, lasting four to five hours.

For some hard-core bikers, it has become an annual early morning tradition.  Organized by the Firefly Brigade, bikers from Palawan, Bacolod and Baguio also joined simultaneous races last Sunday.

Blogger “belly” posted pictures of some of the most interesting-looking bikers (and bikes) he’s seen during the ride. As the number of bikers joining the tour has risen tremendously, he says it’s nice to have a once-a-year event where bikes rule the city streets.

“TOM d’ Biker” found the ride enjoyable despite seeing discontented motorists and pedestrians caught in traffic gridlocks.  He likewise posted numerous photos taken from different stages of the ride.

Those who have been biking for a long time attest that riding on two wheels is not only a great way to exercise, it is also the best way to “stay in touch” with the world. Once a year, human fireflies come out in droves to tell the world they care enough to keep it clean.
