QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – For parents and kids who ran the recent Amazing Kidney race, it served as both bonding time and learning experience.

To further promote awareness on taking care of one of our body’s vital organs, the Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN) recently held the Amazing Kidney Race at the University of the Philippines campus.

Coinciding with World Kidney Day 2010, the race welcomed novice and seasoned runners – many of them families – who ran the race wearing a shirt that says “I run. I care” around a pair of kidneys. The race was also supported by the UP Family Life and Child Development Center (UP-FLCD).

Runners were divided into different categories but those that got the most cheers were participants in the 2.2 kilometer Parent-Child Tandem Run. I remember seeing a father running while proudly taking a video of his three-year old son running beside him.

Joyce Dumlao, meanwhile, joined the tandem race with her son Jason. According to her, not only did she enjoy running but found it a worthwhile learning experience.  Joyce teaches at UP-FLCD, which co-sponsored the race, but nonetheless says she would have joined anyway as bonding time with her son.

Proceeds from the Amazing Kidney Race will be used to support PSN’s kidney disease awareness campaign and the operation and treatment of kidney patients. Part of the proceeds will also benefit the UP-FLCD.
