MANILA, METRO MANILA — The Philippines is not exactly a football country but one lucky Filipino kid will become part of the sport’s grandest stage this summer in South Africa.
Sony Ericsson is searching for a Filipino child to become the country’s flag bearer in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The Philippines is not exactly playing in the tournament but whoever wins it becomes part of history.
“This will be the first time for the Philippines to participate in a FIFA World Cup event,” says Dennis Manzano, Sony Ericsson Philippines General Manager.
So what would it take to become the country’s flag bearer? Simply create a 30-60 second video and creatively answer: “Why I deserve to win the Sony Ericsson Search for the FIFA World Cup flag bearer.” Then upload the video to www.clickthecity/sonyericssonfifa.
The contest is open to Filipino children aged 10-16 years old. It will be a test of creativity as children are encouraged to have fun and present their reasons in play, song, dance and other creative ways.
Five finalists will be chosen and the winner will be decided by the most number of votes gathered on the website.
The World Cup campaign also coincides with the launch of the Sony Ericsson Kita, what the mobile phone company describes as the first “gesture gaming” phone. The Kita also comes with a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus, 4x digital zoom, face detection and geo-tagging.
According to some reviews, the Kita incorporates the gaming interface of Nintendo’s popular Wii console. It was launched in other countries as the Sony Ericsson Yari but the company changed the phone’s name locally.
Sony Ericsson will award Kita phones to each of the five finalists in the video contest. The winning child (along with the parent or guardian) can use the Kita to document his or her World Cup experience. “The handset will help him or her keep in touch, and keep us posted on this historic journey ahead,” says Manzano.
Sony Ericsson is the official mobile handset in the 2010 World Cup and has launched its “Extra Man” campaign that encourages support for competing nations via various online platforms.
