TAGUIG CITY, METRO MANILA – Some 257 elementary and high school students would receive the Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Award for winning in various international science and mathematics competitions,

The YES Award is the highest such honor bestowed upon young Filipino achievers by the Department of Science and Technology (DoST).

At least a dozen international math and science-related competitions were held in 2011 and many Filipino participants were able to garner a number of medals.

Among these contests are the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) wherein the Philippines has been a consistent winner.

Among the winners were 26 students from the Saint Jude Catholic School in Manila and 19 students from the Philippine Science High School–Main Campus.

Many of the students who participated in math contests were trained by the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines. Meanwhile, participants in science competitions were trained either by their respective schools or by the DoST.

DOST-Science Education Institute (DoST-SEI) Director Filma Brawner said that participating in competitions allow young Filipino talents to show their skills in science and math. She noted that these contests also aim to improve the participants’ skills so that they can become better.

Competing with different nations is not an easy task, contestants go to unfamiliar locations, dwell with diverse culture, and must pass through extensive sets of challenges,” Brawner said..

“Plus, nowadays, the fast rise in the advancement of technology can add up as distractions to their studies. But our students before us show that it can be done, that a student can still top in his or her studies despite all these distractions and adversities,” Brawner said.
