QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to establish additional rain water collection system units in public schools this year.
A budget of P39.6 million has been allocated for the construction of 547 units particularly in far-flung areas that lack rainwater facilities.
DPWH also partnered with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to ensure the effective implementation of the project and help identify specific activities relative to its use.
The installation of these rainwater systems is part of the government’s climate adaptation program that aims to promote water conservation in the face of diminishing water supply caused by several factors including over extraction of ground water.
Various types of the unit include a reinforced concrete ground storage tank, which can hold up to 8,000 liters of water; the reinforced steel ground storage tank with 4,000 liters capacity; plastic container tank with 4,000 liters; and the concrete stage storage tank with 60,000 liters capacity.
The DPWH has already completed some 136 units for this quarter, giving priority to public schools without potable water services.
