BUTUAN CITY, AGUSAN DEL NORTE – Some 3,900 armchairs were recently donated to two of the most populated schools in the Caraga region.
The Butuan Central Elementary School (BCES), which currently has 5,000 students, received 1,900 armchairs reducing the school’s backlog to only 100.
Around 2,000 armchairs were also donated to Agusan National High School (ANHS) whose total student population stands at 9,000.
The donated equipment came from the P-NOY Bayanihan Project of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The joint initiative uses confiscated logs from the DENR as raw material which were processed and produced in TESDA woodworking sites across the country.
It aims to reduce the backlog of an estimated 2.5 million chairs in 45,000 public elementary and high schools nationwide.
Some 6,096 armchairs have already been donated to nine public schools here including Butuan City School of Arts and Trades, 800; Libertad Elementary School, 186; Villa Kanangga Elementary School, 260; La Trinidad Elementary School, 450; Ong Yiu Elementary School, 100; Kinamlutan Elementary School, 50; and San Vicente Elementary School, 350.
TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva said there are still 15,000 chairs due for delivery in other schools and is looking at other provinces in need of additional school equipment.
Besides armchairs, the state-run gaming firm has also allotted P1 billion for the funding of its “Matuwid na Daan sa Silid-Aralan Project”, which aims to build 1,000 classrooms nationwide.
“We are also looking at promoting the sport of football at the grassroots level all over the country by holding football festivals this year. We’re discussing this matter with the Philippine Football Federation,” PAGCOR Chief Cristino Naguiat Jr. said.
