QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – At Manuel Roxas High School, students carry out real-time discussions while tuned in to the ongoing impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

This is part of the  “special lesson” project series organized by Kabataan Partylist Representative Raymond Palatino and the youth impeachment watchdog alliance “#i-monitor”.

Activities include live TV viewing of impeachment process followed by a discussion and analysis, legal vocabulary building, real-time updating in social networking sites, “freedom wall” writing, and other exercises like identification of the parts of a SALN form.

Palatino is hoping this initiative will promote awareness among students on politics and government so they could have knowledge of current events.

Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies) teacher Mabelle Caboboy, one of the conveyors of the special lesson, said that students should be not only be made aware but shown and explained the impeachment process for them to get a substantial grasp of the issue.

Concepts of justice and accountability should be introduced to our youth at an early age in order to empower them,” she said.

“Through these discussions, teachers like myself are able to embolden our youth to be responsible and principled members of society.”

Corona is under trial for alleged violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, and graft and corruption.
