QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – The Philippines will be hosting the Global Conference on Land-Ocean Connection (GLOC) that will discuss new strategies on protecting coastal and marine ecosystems amid a changing global climate and growing human population.
The event, organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), would be held at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel on January 23 to 27.
It will also precede the third Intergovernmental Review Meeting (IGR-3), which is a global review group for the implementation of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities.
Results during this specific event will be forwarded during the upcoming Rio+20, which is the UN Conference on Sustainable Development.
With the theme “Towards Greener Coastal Economies”, the GLOC event in Manila will highlight some best practices in coastal and marine ecosystem management as well as focus on new intervention projects to ensure long-term sustainability.
One of the documents to be discussed during this event is the recently released UNEP report entitled “Green Economy in a Blue World” that details the need to improve the global fisheries industries to reverse the decline in available fish supply.
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Ramon Paje said the event provides an opportunity to highlight the Philippines’ successes in coastal and marine biodiversity protection.
He also added that the establishment of the “Manila Declaration,” describing the collective inputs of the local and international delegates during this event will also highlight the commitment of international organizations in protecting marine biodiversity.
