LAOAG CITY, ILOCOS NORTE –Local government units (LGUs) and several schools have already started environment-related projects in line with this year’s tourism week.
Among these is a tree planting program held at the Paoay Lake National Park attended by LGUs of Ilocos Norte, the Department of Tourism (DoT), and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
A coastal cleaning activity was also held in Bangui, a coastal town that is home to the Bangui Wind Farm. Tourism activities are also being held at the Dragon Fruit Farm and mini-hydro electric power plant in Pagudpud.
Likewise, the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) has opened a convention with the theme “Enhancing Ilocos Tourism Through Eco-Friendly Technology,” which highlights green technology and its uses for environment protection and preservation.
The event also highlights the province’s agri-tourism projects.
MMSU also launched its “Eco-Fun Run” for tourism students in the province. A scholarship grant for indigent students of the MMSU is being put up as part of the Eco-Fun Run.
Preservation of the country’s wetlands and forests is the main focus of this year’s National Tourism Week organized by the DENR and the Department of Tourism DoT in Laoag City.
The National Tourism Week is being held from September 16 to 30. This follows the focus of the “World Wetlands Day” last February 2 held by the World Tourism Organization (WTO).
The WTO eyes the protection and preservation of our natural resources in line with the theme “World Wetlands Day 2011 – Forests for Water and Wetlands.”
Both agencies are setting new programs that target the protection of wetlands and forests from man-made destruction. The DENR and DoT are also aiming to enable tourism as a viable industry in the country’s natural habitats.
