QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— The anthem of the University of the Philippines now has an accompanying video produced and directed by alumnus Teddy Salido.

Teddy, who is based in Cagayan de Oro, was recently in Manila to shoot and produce the video. “We did the film shoots in three days and we plan to release the music video on September 15 during the investiture of the new UP president,” he says in an interview.

Teddy was commissioned to do the video by Ruben Defeo, his former professor in the College of Fine Arts.

Professionally, he has been filming wedding and events over the last ten years and has recently been tapped as speaker in the upcoming Wedding & Event Videographers Association Expo (WEVAEXPO) on October 5 to 6.

“The video will show basically what UP campus life is for students, excerpts of what UP Diliman is then and now, including prominent structures and landmarks,” Teddy says.

Asked to summarize the video in a few words, Salido says: “If I could summarize it in four words, I’d sayd it is about ‘my place my, home.’ Everybody would agree that your school is your second home and for the alumni, we wanted to bring a lot of memories and have them recall what their UP life was.”

While filming the video, Teddy recalls  he cannot help but remember life in the campus, although “not much has changed in UP Diliman.”

“In fact, it is not really hard for me to correlate and deal with the current students of UP because I just see myself in them.”

The video shows the UP Oblation, the newly-restored Carillion, Main Library, Palma Hall, college buildings and other prominent university landmarks. Shots of students were also taken but the video did not focus on prominent personalities so as not to outdate the video, according to Teddy.

“We are not trying to relate the scenes based on the lyrics per se but in the entirety, it aims to inspire the alumni to reminisce and remember their UP days,” he says.

The video also features creative shots of the UP Oblation from different angles and taken at various time of day.

Teddy says his UP education allowed him to learn the importance of confidence in oneself.

“With the challenges in life, if you don’t believe in your capability then how would you expect people to trust you? It should start within yourself and always go that extra mile when doing something.”

Very nice videos and sequences… my hats off to Teddy Salido and his team.

However, the video should not be known as the official video of the “UP Naming Mahal.” It only shows footages from UP Diliman and nothing from the other campuses.

Although Diliman is the flagship campus, my opinion is that it is not right to promote or say that the video will be officially that of the UP System. Just my thoughts. Of course, as a creative endeavor, the production of the video rests entirely on Teddy Salido and Prof. Ruben Defeo.
