QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA—The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) is urging local government leaders to wage clean-up drives in their localities to prevent the spread of dengue in the country.
This directive was issued to local officials amid reports from the Department of Health (DoH) that dengue cases in the country has reached to 38,876 from January 1 to July 23. The figure is lower than the 25.85% or 52,428 cases in 2010 but this year’s recorded number of deaths is at 226, mostly children.
The directive mandates local officials to enforce environmental sanitation drives such as dredging of clogged canals, esteros, and other waterways that may have contain stagnant water. The directive also includes information drive on environmental control of breeding sites especially in endemic areas.
The clean-up drive is to be conducted for two consecutive weekends (August 20 and August 21 and August 27 and August 28) to stop the spread of the dengue especially in Metro Manila where the numbers of victims continue to grow.
DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo stressed that despite the lower number of dengue cases compared to cases reported in 2010, LGUs and public should remain vigilant. The official is also encouraging the public to use mosquito repellants or wear long sleeve shirts and pants to prevent dengue.
