QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA– Quezon City takes a greener path by adopting the use of energy-efficient light emitting diodes (LEDs) to light up its densely-populated streets.

The city government plans to install some 10,000 LED street lamps this year and another 12,000 streetlights until 2016 in a bid to cut power consumption by 50 percent.

Presently, the city spends millions of pesos for its street lamps made up mostly of high-pressure sodium bulbs. Existing street lamps account for 64.6 percent of the city’s electrical consumption.

The LED installation is eyed to add to the city-wide lighting program, completion of which is targeted at 80 percent by year-end.

Among the areas that will have the new streetlamps include Katipunan Avenue, Aurora Boulevard, Visayas Avenue, West Avenue, Timog Avenue, IBP Road long Commonwealth Avenue, A. Bonifacio Avenue, Quirino Highway, Tandang Sora, SB Road along Gen. Luis, and Litex Road along Commonwealth Avenue.

Other areas that will get LED street lamps are Bagong Silangan, Batasan Hills, Commonwealth, Holy Spirit, Payatas, Novaliches Proper, Gulod, Bahay-Toro and Ramon Magsaysay.

The city has been advocating green technologies in the last few years and has even adopted the internationally-recognized Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for the construction of environment-friendly buildings.

Quezon City mayor Herbert Bautista also stressed that the public should adopt green practices by adopting sustainable projects, such as proper garbage disposal in their areas.

Hope we can use more solar energy &/or lights instead of LED. Its more earth-saving & cost efficient . Let’s light all our sidewalks & remove all its obstructions like illegal parking, encroachment of structures & illegal vendors . We need more parks, gardens, fountains & open spaces in our barangays.
