CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, MISAMIS ORIENTAL–Plan International Philippines is currently conducting a series of psychosocial therapy retraining to aid the survivors of Typhoon Sendong.
Many survivors still need stress debriefing despite showing signs of recovery, according to Teles Laplana, Project Coordinator for Disaster Risk Reduction.
“There are those who now manage to live back to normal but many of them, especially the children, still cry at the slightest reminder of what happened that tragic day,” he explained.
Cagayan de Oro and Iligan ( in Lanao del Norte) were among the worst-hit by Sendong two weeks before 2011 came to a close, leaving thousands of dead and hundreds still unaccounted for.
The retraining sessions cater to professional therapists, local government officials and even volunteer psychology students from major universities in the province.
“The main goal here is to help them in dealing with trauma should another typhoon hit (this northern part of Mindanao),” said Plan International Philippines Communications Officer Mardy Halcon.
They will also educate students on the concept of disaster risk to heighten awareness on how such calamities could be prevented.
“We will also work with the local government especially on hazard mapping or the relocation sites so they can pass on the skills and knowledge to other neighboring towns who may also be at risk,” Halcon added.
Some towns in the affected areas have begun rebuilding what was spared of their properties while the construction of relocation sites in the city has yet to be completed.
Most of the survivors are now living in clusters of tents provided by various non-government organizations including Plan International and the Irish Aid.
