QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – JP Bautista was extra thrilled to get a one-peso coin from his purse upon seeing that it was the limited edition minted with the number “150” beside the profile of Dr. Jose Rizal on the obverse side of the coin.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) recently issued the new coins, which have the same size and weight—at 24 millimeters in diameter and 5.35 grams—as the current one-peso coins in circulation.

The new one-peso coin pays tribute to the heroism of Rizal, whose birth and death is being remembered every June 19 and December 30, respectively.

Bautista said he was excited to get hold of the new edition one-peso coins and added that he has no plans of spending it anytime soon.

“I’d like to hold to it because it is one of those rare finds, especially that I got it on Rizal Day,” said Bautista, even posting a photo of the one-peso coin on Facebook.

While some would hardly notice the difference and the value of the newly designed coin, save for the coin collectors, Bautista said that he is hopeful this would inspire Filipinos to remember the country’s national hero.

He encourages young Filipinos to read more books or watch movies about Philippine history, in general.
