CABUYAO, LAGUNA – Green is a prevailing color – literally and otherwise – this Christmas for locals in the provinces of Laguna, Palawan and Cebu who opted to create and decorations using readily available organic and recyclable materials.
Residents of Barangay Niugan in Cabuyao installed a giant lantern made up of discarded 1.5-liter plastic bottles along the national highway.
Locals opted to assemble the discarded plastic bottles into a giant lantern instead of throwing them away as a statement to encourage people to reduce, reuse and recycle waste, said resident Carla Salazar.
The giant lantern’s glow is visible to commuters passing by Cabuyao. Barangay residents likewise erected giant Christmas trees made of recycled plastic bottles in the barangay and municipal halls.
Meanwhile, in the town of Coron in Palawan, residents alson also installed a 90-feet giant Christmas tree using dried grass leaves painted in green, old fishnets (since Coron is a fishing community) and old floating balls discarded by fishpen owners.
Winona Labanan, manager of Kookie Lodge’s restaurant, said the giant Christmas tree is an annual attraction for locals and tourists alike simply because of its size.
“The giant Christmas tree is simply magnificent and at the background you can see the outline of the sleeping giant mountain, which is another rare find here in Coron,” added Winona.
The Christmas tree also livens up the Coron harbor at night especially this time of the year when locals and tourists alike enjoy spending walks with their family and loved ones.
In Cebu City, there is also a giant Christmas tree by built by the M. Lhuiller Group of Companies situated at Fuente Osmena. According to this report, the Christmas tree is made up of traditional fans, lanterns with colorful banderitas and the image of the patron saint Sto.Nino on top of the Christmas tree and at the cone’s base.
Michel Lhuiller said the company has started the tradition of putting up the giant Christmas tree at the rotunda of Fuente Osmena for nine consecutive years as part of the Christmas sa Sugbu celebration. Instead of static light, the Christmas tree has changing lights in the seven colors of the rainbow similar to the fountain found at the plaza.
The “Sugbu” Christmas tree can be viewed on top of any building nearby but you can get the best view from Crown Regency Hotel’s 37th floor as you traverse the Sky Walk adventure at 130 meters above the ground. The Christmas tree towers above the trees and most of the old buildings around the plaza.
