MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – The Spanish Cooperation Agency for International Development (AECID) has granted 900,000 Euros (approximately P51 million) to help fund relief efforts for victims of Typhoon Sendong.
Sendong (international name Washi) struck northern Mindanao, particularly Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City, last weekend as President Benigno Aquino III declared a national state of calamity.
The death toll has been pegged to at least 1,000 with hundreds more still missing.
The Spanish agency has allocated 400,000 Euros (approximately P22 million) for the purchase of relief goods such as food, water, clothing, emergency kits, shelter materials, blankets and tents.
The remaining amount will be spent for the recovery and rehabilitation needs of residents in hardest hit areas.
Half of the grant will be channelled through humanitarian NGOs, including the Save the Children, Action against Hunger and the Spanish Red Cross. These groups are expected to facilitate the operations in the affected areas.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain is monitoring the situation through its Embassy and Technical Cooperation Office in Manila.
Spanish officials from the Technical Cooperation Office of AECID in Manila have also joined the Needs Assessment Team led by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the United Nations humanitarian country team and other international donors and NGOs.
