MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – President Benigno Aquino III has issued a national state of calamity amid the destruction wrought by tropical typhoon “Sendong” (international name “Washi”) that hit Mindanao on December 15.

Aquino made the declaration during a meeting on Tuesday with executives of national government agencies in Cagayan de Oro that are doing emergency services and monitoring.

Under a state of national calamity, prices of goods will be controlled in affected areas to allow victims and survivors make purchases without additional costs. It would also prevent greedy vendors from taking advantage of the increased demand for necessities, particularly food, water, and clothing.

It would also allow the government to release emergency funds. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and local government units have a combined relief assistance amounting to P8.1 million.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that the number of deaths is at 1,000 with about 50 more still missing. The worst areas affected are Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

The NDRRMC also reported on the amount of damages wrought by Sendong. Agricultural damages is put at P1.9 million.
