MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA— The United Nations (UN) is allotting $375.7 million over the next seven years fund to fund additional development projects in the Philippines.
Bulk of the grant amounting to $147.2 million from the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) fund was earmarked to strengthen capacities of national and local agencies to deliver quality social services for the poor.
The UNDAF is partnership-based so all 25 UN agencies that operate in the Philippines will converge their respective programmes, said UN resident coordinator, Dr. Jacqueline Badcock.
The UN program runs from 2012 to 2018 and aligns the organization’s development initiatives with the Philippine Development Plan for 2011-2016 “to achieve inclusive growth,” added Badcock.
Moreover, the UNDAF outlines the UN Country Team (UNCT) in the Philippines’ strategic responses to the development priorities.
Of the total investment, some $79 million will come from regular UN sources, while the rest will be mobilized from other sources.
Other project programs are as follows: $46.5 million to generate decent and productive employment through sustainable and “green” growth, $67.2 million to promote broad and local participation in governance, and $114.8 million to strengthen national and local resilience to climate change, threats and disasters.
The UNDAF 2012-2018 will be launched on November 18 at the SGV Hall of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in Makati City. Over 300 participants from government, development partners/donors and civil society are expected to attend.
Secretary Jesse Robredo of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and Deputy Director-General Rolando Tungpalan of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) will keynote the event.
